I'm a free weight kind of fella, I prefer dumbbells to barbells for the following reasons,Stability muscles and Range of motion

I use both. I have only limited equipment at my home gym: a few machines and some dumbbells. I'm gonna buy 2 barbells ( a straight one and a EZ bar) and plates. I realize that I need to alternate free weights and machines to have a complete workout.

Free weights but I do use some machines when injuries get to me. I have also used machines when doing negs with no training partner.

if i could only choose one it would have to be free weights, but i do apply both. not too much machine work though.

A lot depends on your ultimate goal and your own choice.Many of the people find its easy to work out on machines than free weights while others are addicted to the free weights and hate to work out on machine.
