You are right, something is always lost. Sometimes more and at other times less.

I would estimate about 1cc per vial of gear is wasted in the "dead space" of the needle - the hollow area right below the needle, assuming one is pulling 1cc per draw. More is wasted if you're doing 1/2 cc draws.
