A member of the armed SO18 Aviation Security branch of the Metropolitan Police has been suspended from firearms duties over allegations of supplying illegal body building steroids to colleagues. Jarnail Virdee is an armed police officer at London Heathrow Airport.

The officer in his 30s was arrested at his home in Reading on suspicion of conspiracy to supply a Class C drug. The arrest came after a tip-off to the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, and a number of glass vials alleged to contain the steroids were taken from his home.

Senior figures at Scotland Yard were said to be “deeply concerned” that highly-trained officers in possession of firearms were using the drugs, for fear they may be affected by aggressive tendencies and poor judgement when put under pressure.

A Scotland Yard source told a national newspaper: “The idea that these officers were using steroids and then going out on armed duties is terrifying.

“There is a well-documented link between steroids and violence. One of these officers could have gone berserk in a tight situation.”

Three other people, including two men and a woman in her 30s have also been arrested on suspicion of the production and supply of the illegal drugs
