Earlier today (April 12, 2018), it was announced that former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm would next be taking on Megan Anderson in a bout that will be contested at 145 pounds at UFC 225, which is set for June 9, 2018 from Chicago.

It’s a bit surprising to see the UFC book Anderson, who will be making her UFC debut against Holm, in a non-title fight given that she was scheduled to challenge for the title this past July, but was then forced to withdraw from the fight due to personal reasons.

145-pound titleholder Cris Cyborg is in need of an opponent and Anderson would appear to make sense, but Cyborg said that she’s ‘not surprised’ by the booking, taking a shot at Holm in the process:

“I’m not surprised,” Cyborg told FanSided on Thursday. “I said this was going to happen months ago. It’s how the UFC works, no. 1 contender is going to fight someone I already beat.

“The UFC knows Holly needs a couple wins so we can rematch,” Cyborg said. “Right now her record is terrible. She’s in the negative.”

Holm has indeed hit a rough patch, as she’s gone just 1-4 in her last five bouts, most recently suffering a decision defeat to Cyborg at UFC 219 this past December.

Regardless, the Brazilian champion is ‘excited’ to see fights being made in her division:

“The fight with Megan will be great,” Cyborg said. “Megan’s a big girl and she will do her best in her first UFC fight. I’m excited it will be the first 145-pound fight without a belt.”

As far as what’s next for Cyborg, a potential super fight with bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes could still be on the table. UFC President Dana White expressed interest in the bout, but Nunes was then booked to defend her 135-pound title against Raquel Pennington next month at UFC 224 in Brazil.

If she comes out on top, the stars could align for a bout between her and Cyborg.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has made it clear and thrown down the challenge. He is ready for his rematch with bitter rival Jon Jones, and it appears that the fight will take place at UFC 214. While the UFC has yet to make the bout official, it has been a long road to having a second showdown between these two fighters. The fight is being targeted for the July 29 event, which takes place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The main card airs on pay-per-view while the prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Cormier did not confirm the matchup on this week’s edition of UFC Tonight on FOX Sports 1 where he is the co-host. Jones has fought just once since his initial clash with Cormier at UFC 182 in January 2015 because of various outside-the-octagon issues. His last fight came in April 2016 at UFC 197 resulted in a unanimous-decision win over Ovince Saint Preux. On the other hand, Cormier, who is coming off a second-round submission of Anthony Johnson earlier this month at UFC 210, has teased a potential title defense against Jimi Manuwa. Cormier stated that he calls the shots in the division and that Jones shouldn’t fight anyone but him upon his return.

“Take the fight with me, Jon Jones,” Cormier said (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie. “There are no tune-up fights in the UFC. Try to get your title back. Come meet your boy ‘DC,’ come get this *****. Let’s get ***** together and give the people in Anaheim a show. No tune-up for Jon Jones, he gets to come and get beat by me this time. We’re fighting right now, or he doesn’t get to fight me. It’s my rules, I’m the champ now.”

It will be very interesting to see if the Cormier vs. Jones rematch will serve as the UFC 214 main event as UFC President Dana White has suggested it will not due to the trust issues with Jones. Either way, “DC” expects to come out victorious this time.

“The person that we saw against Ovince Saint Preux is the new, USADA-regulated Jon Jones,” Cormier said. “He’s always going to look like that. So, yes, I will beat him up on July 29th.”
Holly Holm Still Believes She’s ‘In The Mix’ For Title Opportunity

Despite her recent losing skid, former UFC bantamweight champ Holly Holm believes she’s still in the title mix.

‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ gained a ton of notoriety after becoming the first woman to defeat Ronda Rousey in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, when she knocked out ‘Rowdy’ in the second round of their bout in 2015. Since then, however, Holm has been on a three-fight losing skid, which included the inaugural women’s featherweight title match against Germain de Randamie in February.

During a recent episode of The MMA Hour, Holm discussed the current position she’s at in her fighting career, and believes she’s still in the title hunt (quotes via MMA Mania):

“I still feel like I’m in the mix and I still feel like I am competitive and up in the top. So, you never know when that next opportunity can come,” she said.

Holm believes that she got a little too antsy with the limelight of her newfound success after defeating Rousey, being a key factor as to why she’s currently on a three-fight losing streak:

“I think after having the belt, it was more like, ‘Wow, I’ve only had two fights in UFC before they gave me my title fight.’ I always feel my career is on a fast track, but I was on a faster track and I felt everybody coming and felt I needed to get even better.

“Maybe I got just a little too antsy with some of that instead of taking it day by day and each day at a time,” she continued. “Maybe I was kind of worried about everything rather than what was going on at the moment. Hopefully, I learned from those mistakes and make it all worth something now.”

The former 135-pound champ is already set to make her next Octagon appearance, as she will take on former bantamweight title challenger Bethe Correria in the main event of UFC Fight Night 111 from the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Sat., June 17, 2017.

Frank Mir Suspended Two Years For USADA Violation
By Mike Drahota -
Apr 21, 2017

Legendary former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir may unfortunately end his career suspended.

The 37-year-old submission expert was suspended for two years by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) according to a press release from the UFC, for his use of banned substance dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (DHCMT) in conjunction with his knockout loss to Mark Hunt in March 2016.

The press release went into detail about an out-of-competition test sample that was previously labeled negative actually being positive. The UFC described the sequence of events and Mir’s suspension overall on their USADA website:

USADA announced today that UFC® athlete, Francisco (Frank) Mir, of Las Vegas, Nev., received a two-year sanction after multiple positive tests for a prohibited substance.

Mir, 38, tested positive for a long-term metabolite of dehydrochloromethyltestosterone (DHCMT), following an in-competition test conducted on March 20, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 85 in Brisbane, Australia. DHCMT is a non-Specified Substance in the class of Anabolic Agents and prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. The finding of a long-term DHCMT metabolite in Mir’s sample, which was identified through a new detection method by the WADA-accredited laboratory in Tokyo, Japan, led to Mir being provisionally suspended from competition on April 8, 2016.

Upon learning of the positive results of the sample analyzed in Tokyo, USADA had all previously collected stored samples for Mir reanalyzed at the WADA-accredited laboratory in Salt Lake City, Utah (SMRTL), which had also recently implemented methodology for the detection of newly identified long-term DHCMT metabolites. As a result of the additional analyses, SMRTL discovered that an out-of-competition sample Mir provided on February 5, 2016, which had previously been reported to USADA as negative for the presence of prohibited substances, was also positive for the same long-term DHCMT metabolite found in Mir’s in-competition sample.

If the retroactive suspension is indeed the end for Mir, he’ll go down as one of the greatest heavyweights in UFC history, owning several elite records such as most wins, fights, and finishes in UFC heavyweight history. He owns the UFC record for most first-round finishes with 10 also.

But if there was any division Mir could potentially make a comeback in it’s heavyweight, as the UFC’s largest weight class is also its oldest, with many of the top competitors fighting into their late 30s and beyond. Still, Mir has absorbed 8 knockout losses and this blemish on his record doesn’t help, but should he return for one more bout in the octagon he’s made so much history in?

Jacare Souza Inks Multi-Fight Extension With UFC

Ronaldo Souza won’t be hitting the free agency market after all.

The No. 3-ranked middleweight is set to take on Robert Whittaker on tomorrow’s (Sat. April 15, 2017) UFC on FOX 23 card from Kansas City, Missouri, which was set to be the final bout on his UFC contract. Souza was set to hit the free agency market alongside fellow top middleweight prospect Gegard Mousasi, putting two of the promotion’s best unknown 185 pounders at risk of leaving the promotion.

According to a post from Souza on social media, however, the Brazilian has signed a new eight-fight deal to keep the jiu-jitsu specialist under the UFC’s banner for the foreseeable future:

I’m very happy! New contract signed with UFC. Let’s go for some more battles! #TeamJacare

Souza is on a two-fight win streak coming off victories over Vitor Belfort and Tim Boetsch. Prior to that, Jacare had an eight-fight undefeated streak snapped after a controversial split decision loss to Yoel Romero at UFC 194 in December of 2015.

If Souza is able to earn a victory over up-and-coming Robert Whittaker coming off of two back-to-back victories, he’ll make quite the case for a shot at the middleweight title.

He’s done that before, however.
It may be true that mixed martial arts (MMA) presents some of the most elated highs and crushing emotional lows of any sport, but there were an unusual number of the latter at last weekend’s (April 8, 2017) UFC 210 from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.

The pay-per-view (PPV) card was home to one of the most controversial endings in recent memory in its co-main event, and also featured no less than two longtime stars retiring, including top-ranked light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who lost to current champion Daniel Cormier in the main event.

A strange scene unfolded when it appeared that Johnson’s coaches had left his side when he announced his shocking retirement, but in the just-released “UFC 210: The Thrill and the Agony” from the UFC, fans can see that was anything but the case, as Johnson and Hooft shared an emotional embrace where “Rumble” admitted he made a big mistake.

Many accused “Rumble” of packing it in and facing Cormier in an area he knew he would lose, but the video appears to show that the fan favorite fighter cared very much about winning what will be his final MMA fight for now.

Anderson Silva Wants To Fight Nick Diaz At UFC 212

Former longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was scheduled to take on rising contender Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, but it was reported last week that Gastelum had been flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation, which subsequently forced him out of the bout with Silva.

The UFC quickly made it clear that “The Spider” would likely remain on the card, and names like Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort emerged as potential replacement opponents. Silva, however, doesn’t appear to be interested in fighting either man:

“I’m coming off a win (over Derek Brunson), right, after a long time without wins, so it doesn’t make sense to fight any of them because they are both coming off losses,” Silva said at a UFC 212 press conference in Rio de Janeiro (Via MMAFighting.com). “It’s not something that will add anything for me. It doesn’t make sense.

“I’m ready to fight whoever the UFC puts there. It doesn’t matter who that is, be someone who’s coming off wins and adds something to my legacy, otherwise it doesn’t make sense.”

Instead, Silva expressed interest in a rematch with former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz:

“It’s something that was on the table ,too, it’s possible that it happens this fight with Nick,” said Silva.

“I respect him, he’s an excellent fighter,” Silva said. “It would be an interesting fight. It would be cool because this fight makes sense. The (first) fight was a no contest, so we’ll see. Anything can happen.”

The first fight was indeed declared a no-contest. Silva technically won the bout via unanimous decision, but the result was overturned after both men failed drug tests.

Diaz, like Silva, was handed a suspension for his failed drug test, but he was deemed eligible to fight again this past August, although he has yet to return to the Octagon.
Holly Holm vs. Bethe Correia Reported To Headline UFC Fight Night 11

Since losing her UFC bantamweight title via fifth round submission to Miesha Tate at March 2016’s UFC 196, Holly Holm has lost two straight bouts, with her most recent fight resulting in a decision loss to Germaine de Randamie in the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight title fight, which headlined UFC 208 in Brooklyn, New York this past January.

After her failed attempt at capturing 145-pound gold, it looks as if “The Preacher’s Daughter” is headed back down to bantamweight. According to a report from MMAFighting.com, the UFC is targeting a bout between Holm and former 135-pound title challenger Bethe Correia to headline UFC Fight Night 11 in Singapore on June 17, 2017.

After losing to Tate, Holm was outpointed by Valentina Shevchenko last July before falling short against De Randamie. Her last victory was a shocking knockout win over Ronda Rousey at Nov. 2015’s UFC 193.

Correia is coming off of a majority draw against Marion Reneau last month. Prior to that, she had scored a split-decision victory over Jessica Eye last September.
Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre has a target date.

UFC President Dana White recently joined TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter to discuss the upcoming middleweight title bout between Bisping and St-Pierre, which currently does not have an official date or venue in place, and revealed that the details for the bout will be made official soon.

White said there are a few more steps that need to be taken, but an announcement can be expected within a week or so (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“I’m anticipating and anxiously waiting for a day, too,” White said. “We’re waiting. There’s some things we have to wait for. I’m assuming probably another week I should have a date.”

“If it’s up to me, it’ll be in Vegas, yes, July 8,” he said.

St-Pierre has not lost a fight in MMA competition since his 2007 first round TKO loss to Matt Serra at UFC 69. The Canadian is currently on a 12-fight win streak and his last fight saw him take home a controversial split decision win over Johny Hendricks in 2013 to defend his then-welterweight title for the ninth consecutive time.

‘GSP’ vacated the 170-pound throne and announced his retirement soon after, but fast-forward nearly four years later and ‘Rush’ is ready to make his return.

He’ll be challenging UFC middleweight champ Michael Bisping for the 185-pound title and the Brit is currently on a five-fight win streak. Bisping’s last Octagon appearance saw him successfully defend his title for the first time with a unanimous decision victory over Dan Henderson in the main event of UFC 204 back in October.
NYSAC Bans Female Fighter From UFC 210 Because Of Breast Implants

By Tom Niston -

If you thought today’s UFC 210 weigh-ins from Buffalo couldn’t get any weirder, well, they just did.

After a strange scene where UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier weighed in at 206.2 pounds with only moments left to weigh in for his main event versus Anthony Johnson at tomorrow’s (April 8, 2017) UFC 210 from the KeyBank Center and somehow lost the weight in two minutes, the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) has actually taken a fighter off the card for a far more ridiculous reason.

Debuting women’s strawweight Pearl Gonzalez, who was set to meet Cynthia Calvillo on the main card and was allowed to weigh in and make weight, has been removed by the commission for having breast implants, something that apparently isn’t allowed for female fighters in the state of New York.

Gonzalez was reportedly informed she would not be able to take part in the bout after the weigh-ins, odd timing considering she was allowed to appear at all pre-fight media obligations and had passed all medicals. It’s even stranger considering female fighters – for example, retired former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, who took on Raquel Pennington in her final fight at last November’s UFC 205 from New York City – have been allowed to compete with breast implants in the state.

The UFC 210 main event avoided a narrow miss in New York, but the debut of Gonzalez didn’t and will have to wait until a later date and time.

It’s hard to imagine a scenario where they couldn’t have informed Gonzalez of the ruling until she was done weighing in the day before the fight.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will defend his 205-pound title for the second time in a rematch against No. 1-contender Anthony Johnson. The winner will likely go on to face former champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon Jones.

Cormier and Jones have already faced off once before with Jones taking home a unanimous decision victory at UFC 182. The two were supposed to rematch last July at UFC 200, but Jones was forced to withdraw after failing a drug test. He then received a suspension from USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) that will keep him out of action until this upcoming July.

As it turns out, “Bones” will be in attendance at UFC 210 and Cormier recently issued him a warning:

“He better not come in my cage after I win. He’s not welcome in there,” Cormier said on Thursday (Via FOX Sports). “He’s still suspended. When he’s eligible to fight then he can walk in the cage but if he dares to step into that Octagon, something bad will happen.”

Continuing on, “DC” said that if he were in Jones’ shoes, he wouldn’t even attend the event, which is taking place in Buffalo, New York, not too far from where Jones grew up in Rochester, New York:

“This is where he’s from, I get it, but if it was me and I was in his situation, I wouldn’t be here,” Cormier said.

At the end of the day, Cormier admitted that it’s ‘sad’ what Jones has put himself through, but he also said that he’s strictly focused on Johnson:

“The guy is the most talented human being I’ve ever competed against. He’s so good in every aspect of fighting but for him to have done the things he’s done to limit the history that he was making it’s crazy. It’s sad,” Cormier said about Jones. “But at the end of the day, I have to worry about myself and I have to worry about Anthony Johnson.”
