Default Dextrose

What is dextrose?
Dextrose (AKA glucose) is a high GI (glycemic index), fast absorbing type of simple carbohydrate. Dextrose is used by bodybuilders and athletes to induce an insulin spike and replace glycogen in muscle cells which is lost during training.

What is the glycemic index?
Glycemic index measures the rate in which carbohydrates enter the bloodstream. The higher on the glycemic index the carbohydrates are, the faster they are absorbed. Dextrose is very high GI and is absorbed extremely fast.

Insulin spike and dextrose:
Carbohydrates enter the blood stream as glucose and have to be either burnt as fuel for energy, stored in muscle cells as glycogen or stored in fat cells as triglycerides. As the glucose is in the blood stream the body stimulates the release of a carrier hormone insulin, which essentially, takes the glucose from the blood and determines where it is to be deposited.

Dextrose rates very high on the glycemic index meaning that it enters our system extremely fast and so stimulates a high insulin response very quickly. Insulin is a very anabolic hormone as it takes not only glucose to muscle cells, but proteins, amino acids and other essential nutrients such as creatine and glutamine etc.

Dextrose and endurance training:
While dextrose is most commonly used by people trying to gain muscle and weight, it can also b e used by endurance athletes. Typically a lower dose will be used and taken gradually before and during training with 20-35oz of water.

Who can benefit from using dextrose supplements?
As mentioned above, both resistance and endurance athletes can benefit from taking dextrose. People looking to build muscle and gain weight will get the most out of post workout supplementation with dextrose. Endurance athletes can get the same benefits as dextrose provides with a good sports energy drink containing simple carbohydrates.

How to take dextrose:
In most cases, ingesting high GI carbohydrates is a bad idea. High GI carbohydrates are more likely to be stored as fat because they give the body too much energy at one time, more than it needs. If the body does not need the energy it will store it as fat. However, bodybuilders and athletes can benefit from taking dextrose directly after a training session.

Studies have shown that the optimal amount of dextrose needed to induce an insulin spike post workout is 60-75g. Dextrose is particularly effective when mixed with creatine, whey protein and glutamine. The insulin spike created by dextrose will move nutrients from these other supplements into the muscle cells very fast.
