Default Thermic effect

Thermic Effect

The thermic effect of food refers to the calorie expenditure involved in the digestion and utilisation of a nutrient once consumed. When protein is consumed, your body can use up to 30% of the sources’ calories in its digestion, absorption and utilisation. Therefore, a higher consumption of protein can result in increased overall energy expenditure.

Default My doctor recently told me

My doctor says protein is the hardest of the calories to burn, so too much will mean burning less calories. I do eat a lot of protein.

Whole food protein is the hardest food to digest. It takes more energy to digest and it takes the body longer to digest protein than fat and carbs.

When cutting it is advisable to eat whole protein rather than either liquid protein or carbs. This is because if the satiating and themic effects.

I just can't imagine eating 500g protein every day, even if half was liquid or whey. At what point would the body have a break from digesting food. I actually don't think it would be healthy. That's not a criticism btw, just my view.

Don't understand this at all. You are using more calories breaking down and digesting the protein. Not less. You also don't get the roller coaster blood sugar ride that you get when eating carbs, so you won't feel as hungry anyway, which means eating less calories.

Is your doctor overweight?

I started to feel horrible, like Andy said im close to 500 a day at 200lbs, my stomach was just bloated all the time, my body couldnt digest all the protein, it was goin right though me I had to back down and make sure I get all my carbs in. I was so concentrated with getting protein in I didnt care about anything else, I think that was my problem.. too much protein and not enough carbs and veggies to help it break down, im still learning about nutrition

A tip that might help is to drink a spoonful of apple cider vinegar in some water before meals. The acetic acid makes the stomach slightly more acid and that should help it break down the protein.

I feel for you mate. I hate being bloated at all, let alone all the time.
