Dexter competed in his first-ever bodybuilding competition at a local show at age 20, despite being a newbie and having just 3 weeks of preparation before the show, he won the show. This sealed their interest in him and he resolved to participate professionally in bodybuilding.

Dexter placed 3rd in his first National Physique Committee (NPC) championship competition in 1992. He also participated professionally in the Arnold Classic competition in 1999, that same year, he competed in Night of Champions, and also Mr. Olympia. In the Arnold Classic competition, he placed 7th, he placed 3rd in the Night of Champions competition and 9th in Mr. Olympia of 1999.

Moving on to 2007, Dexter competed in Mr. Olympia and came 3rd. At that point, the topic of his placement was debated with critics concluding that he may not hold a higher position in the competition.

However, on September 27, 2008, Dexter competed in the Mr. Olympia again and he took the crown from the then reigning champion of Mr. Olympia, Jay Cutler. The following year, Dexter placed 3rd in the Mr. Olympia contest and that's still a great result.

Dexter didn't stop there, in 2012, he competed again in Mr. Olympia and he came 4th, then later that year he made everyone's jaws drop by winning that year's Master Olympia. In 2013, he won the Arnold Classic title 2013 making it his fourth Arnold Classic title.

Dexter proved himself to be up for the challenge when at age 45, 7 years after he won Mr. Olympia, he contested and placed 2nd at 2015, Mr. Olympia. This was his highest Mr. Olympia win since he earned the Mr. Olympia title in 2008.

By 2020, Dexter planned to round off his bodybuilding career and retire. Having been professionally active in bodybuilding since 1999. He competed at Mr. Olympia 2020 and placed 9th. His last placing at his retirement was the same as his debut in Olympia 1999.
