Man returns to abandoned car 40 years later
A man who abandoned a car in woodland after it broke down 40 years ago has found it in the exact spot where he left it.
Finnish national, Pekka Nummelin, dumped his 1967 Ford Anglia in a forested area behind his parents' house after it gave up the ghost on him in 1974.
After having it towed to the location, Pekka abandoned the family saloon after it became apparent that an economic repair was not viable.
Instead he left the car to rot, and didn't even bother to shift it when he and his family moved to another area of Mikkeli, a small town in the south of the country.
However, last week, Pekka returned to the scene of his historic fly-tipping with his son Tommi, and was amazed to find the vehicle in the exact same spot, albeit now much more 'at one' with the forest, with the Seafoam Green Anglia now sporting a uniquely natural patina.
Speaking to the Huffington Post, Pekka's son Tommi said: "After walking for some minutes through the forest that has slowly been growing the last 40 years, we found a small mossy patch in it where he had left his car.
"The Ford was in better nick than anyone really expected. Because of the remote location, all glasses and lights (except one that was smashed during towing) were intact."
Tommi went on to describe how the car broke down after the upper radiator hose broke loose, which in turn led to the engine's cooling channels being blocked with ice, cracking the engine block and killing the car.
Pekka now plans to return to the car again to gain access to its interior, though he will need the services of a locksmith as he no longer has the keys.
