Food Face-Off
Walnuts vs. Almonds: Sometimes you feel like a nut, but which one is better for the bodybuilder?
The Winner: Walnuts
Nuts are an excellent source of protein and healthy fats and are fairly low in carbs, but some nuts are better than others. Almonds have more carbs and less fat (and have been shown to increase fat loss when eaten in place of carbs); walnuts, with their higher fat content, is our choice in this particular battle. A single ounce of walnuts contains almost all the omega-3 fatty acids you need in a day. Omega-3s are associated with all kinds of health benefits (from improved cardiovascular health to better mood and sharper memory), but are known less for their potent physique-related benefits: They have been shown to increase muscle strength and size, reduce muscle breakdown, boost fat burning and improve insulin sensitivity (which can further aid fat-loss efforts). So, when you feel like a nut, almonds aren't a bad choice, but walnuts are so nutritionally important that they should be a part of your daily diet.
